Making Preparation Count: Lessons from the Avian Influenza Outbreak in Turkey Making Preparation Count: Lessons from the Avian Influenza Outbreak in Turkey This booklet describes the outbreak of human cases of avian influenza in Turkey and the national and international response. Drawing on interviews with some of the key health workers and major agencies involved - the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), as well as WHO - it points out practical lessons that national and international public health agencies and policy-makers can use to respond effectively to future outbreaks and a possible avian influenza pandemic.

The Bird Flu Pandemic provides definitive answers to the questions on all our minds:
- Should we be getting reading for a world catastrophe, and if so, what should we be doing?
- Will masks help?

Dr. Greene knows exactly what we need to do to keep our families safe, sane, and secure in the face of what is potentially an unprecedented and life-threatening worldwide scourge.

2006 If the Bird Flu Pandemic Strikes: Crucial Survival and Medical Data about Influenza, Vaccines, Tamiflu and other Drugs - Avian Flu and the H5N1 Virus (CD-ROM) 2006 If the Bird Flu Pandemic Strikes: Crucial Survival and Medical Data about Influenza, Vaccines, Tamiflu and other Drugs - Avian Flu and the H5N1 Virus (CD-ROM) This up-to-date electronic book on CD-ROM provides the best collection available anywhere of official Federal government information and documents on the subject of bird (avian) influenza and killer influenza pandemics. It includes the latest information on the H5N1 virus which some scientists believe could produce a devastating pandemic similar to the 1918 Spanish Flu which killed tens of millions around the globe. This CD-ROM uses next-generation search technology that allows complete indexing and makes all files on the disc fully searchable. For patients, practical information is provided in clearly written patient education documents. For medical professionals and scientists, doctor reference tools and texts have detailed technical information and clinical background material. Contents include: * Clinical and Medical Information – Risk Groups, Symptoms, Testing, Treatment, Prevention * Vaccination and Antiviral Drugs * Risk of a catastrophic pandemic * Outbreaks of avian influenza ("bird flu") * Clinical Trials An influenza pandemic is a global outbreak of disease that occurs when a new influenza A virus appears or “emerges” in the human population, causes serious illness, and then spreads easily from person to person worldwide. Pandemics are different from seasonal outbreaks or “epidemics” of influenza. Seasonal outbreaks are caused by subtypes of influenza viruses that are already in existence among people, whereas pandemic outbreaks are caused by new subtypes or by subtypes that have never circulated among people or that have not circulated among people for a long time. Past influenza pandemics have led to high levels of illness, death, social disruption, and economic loss. This disc has over 18,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software and Reader software is included. Advanced search and indexing features are built into our reproduction, providing a complete full-text index. This enables the user to search all the files on the disk at one time for words or phrases using just one search command! The Acrobat cataloging technology adds enormous value and uncommon functionality to this impressive collection of government documents and material. Avian Influenza: Prevention and Control (Wageningen UR Frontis Series) Avian Influenza: Prevention and Control (Wageningen UR Frontis Series)

Avian Influenza has become one of the biggest threats for human and animal health. The old paradigm was that the disease in waterfowl, poultry, pigs and man was caused by separate viruses that each stayed reasonably well within their own niche. The only danger to man was considered being infected by pigs, being the mixing vessel, where avian and human influenza viruses could come together and exchange genetic material to form new viruses that are potentially dangerous to man.

This has dramatically proven wrong during the last decade, with huge outbreaks in the USA, Europe, and Asia. The H5N1 strain that caused human deaths in Hong Kong appeared to be transmitted directly from poultry to man. This initiated sudden awareness that pigs were not a necessary intermediate in the transmission chain. During the AI outbreaks in Italy, mutation of low-pathogenicity viruses into high-pathogenicity viruses in poultry appeared another new threat, and further evidence that the poultry sector had a wolf in sheep’s clothing. It put pressure on development of diagnostic methods that could be used in large monitoring programmes.

In The Netherlands a human fatality, after increased reports of conjunctivitis during a H7N7 outbreak, signalled that different AI strains could be fatal to man. Also, the huge economic losses and difficulties in controlling the spread of the infection in densely populated poultry areas, problems with vaccination and lack of marker vaccines demonstrated that the current control policy must be improved. These events led to an international AI conference with experts from Asia, USA and Europe.

In this book you will find new views on the issues, expert opinions and the results of in-depth discussions among avian experts of around the world that do not want to give up against this dangerous virus.

Beating the Flu: The Natural Prescription for Surviving Pandemic Influenza and Bird Flu Beating the Flu: The Natural Prescription for Surviving Pandemic Influenza and Bird Flu Experts agree that the world is due for a flu pandemic, and the Bird Flu virus—with a 70% kill rate—may cause just such a catastrophe. Even conservative estimates say such a scenario could kill 2 million Americans and shut down economic services as the virus rages across the globe. As the world community busily prepares for the potential nightmare, it's essential that individuals arm themselves with up-to-date information. In Beating the Flu, Dr. J. E. Williams apprises the situation honestly and offers vital advice for avoiding Bird Flu as well as steps for safely overcoming the virus should you contract it. Dr. Williams argues that due to a severe shortage in antiviral pharmaceutical drugs, natural medicines will play a crucial role in minimizing the outbreak and ensuring good health for you and your family. Dr. J. E. Williams has practiced Oriental Medicine for more than two decades and is the author of three books. Presently, he is the Academic Dean at the East West College of Natural Medicine.

Wildlife and Emerging Zoonotic Diseases: The Biology, Circumstances and Consequences of Cross-Species Transmission (Current Topics in Microbiology and ... Topics in Microbiology and Immunology) Wildlife and Emerging Zoonotic Diseases: The Biology, Circumstances and Consequences of Cross-Species Transmission (Current Topics in Microbiology and ... Topics in Microbiology and Immunology)

Wildlife and the zoonotic pathogens they reservoir are the source of most emerging infectious diseases of humans. AIDS, hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, SARS, Monkeypox and the human ehrlichioses are a few examples of the devastating effect achieved by cross-species transmission of viral and bacterial pathogens of wildlife. Many factors contribute to the appearance and spread of a pathogen, including; changes in host/pathogen evolution and interaction, human demographics, behavior and technology, environmental factors, and the availability of health care and a public health infrastructure capable of providing surveillance and interventions aimed at disease prevention and control. Additionally, historical factors and the coalescence of particular circumstances modify the conditions by which pathogens and species have an opportunity to intermix, evolve and spread.

This volume provides an overview of zoonotic pathogen emergence with an emphasis on the role of wildlife. The first sections of the book explore the mechanisms by which evolution, biology, pathology, ecology, history, and current context have driven the emergence of different zoonotic agents, the next sections provide specific example of disease emergence linked to wildlife, and the final section offers an overview of current methods directed at the surveillance, prevention and control of zoonotic pathogens at the level of the wildlife host and possible mechanisms to improve these activities. This book will be useful to microbiologists, ecologists, zoologists, entomologists as well as physicians and epidemiologists.
